Laboratory for Analysis and Architecture of Systems: LAAS CNRS

LAAS (Laboratory for Analysis and Architecture of Systems) is one of the largest laboratories of the CNRS, the French National Center for Scientific Research, with nearly 700 researchers, university faculty, engineers, technicians, post-docs and PhD students and 20 research groups. Associated to the University of Toulouse, it conducts fundamental or applied research in science and information technology and communication with an integrative systemic vision. Its two axes transverse ambient intelligence and interaction with the living, are in strong synergy with the areas of several clusters (aerospace, embedded systems, health, environment, power management...). Other evidence of his long-standing industry partnerships: the club of 75 partner companies, SMEs and large groups.

Presentation

4 Main Research Areas

- Micro and Nano system: modeling, design, and characterization, development of technological processes for micro and Nano systems, mostly for communication, for electrical energy management, for chemistry and for life sciences.
- Modeling, optimization and control of systems: Robust control of dynamical systems, polynomial optimization, estimation and diagnostic, supervision, filtering, operational research and production systems.
- Robotics and Artificial Intelligence: Sensory-motor processes, perception and environment modeling, machine cognition, learning, action and motion planning and control, decisional and cognitive architectures, aerial and field robotics, Human-robot interaction, anthropomorphic motion.
- Critical Computer Systems: Fault tolerance, resilience in computer systems, security and safety, privacy, architectures and protocols for communication, quality of service, multimedia, software verification, distributed computing.

Two trans disciplinary axes

  • Interactions with life (biology, humans) with ALIVE program
  • Ambient intelligence, networked and ubiquitous systems with ADREAM program

A tradition of innovation and partnership with industry

LAAS CNRS has established a partnership network in many application areas: aeronautics, space and embedded systems, transportation networks, chemistry, health, environment, energy, defense services. Partnership research has taken the original form of "joint research-industry laboratory", a concept invented in the LAAS in 1991. This special relationship with industry, large or small groups, has also resulted in a “LAAS affiliate partners society”. Research of the LAAS CNRS hasa strong synergy with the business areas of Midi-Pyrenees clusters (Aerospace Valley, Cancer-Bio-Health, AgrimipInnovation, Water) and Systematic, Cap Digital and Derbi clusters. They fit into several platforms of the IRT AESE (Technological Reseach Institute for aeronautics, space and embedded systems).

High tech equipment

Central RTB technology for micro and nanotechnology, member of the national network Renatech RTB, 1500 m² clean room class 10,000 and 100.
Characterization Platform / Interaction with the living.800-m², characterization of components and micro-Nano systems in electrical, microwave, optical, chemical and biological. ALIVE Program: 400-m²platform, the platform Nano biotechnology ITAV (Centre Pierre Potier / Oncopôle).
CAD platform for micro and Nano systems
Robotic Platform
: about ten autonomous robots (humanoid, support, outdoor air and ground). Part of the network Robotex (Equipment of Excellence).
Networks Platform: experimentation and validation of protocol architectures and mechanisms from research networks. Experiments in a real multi-technology, multi domains and supervised, and in an emulated environment.
Embedded Systems Platform (Adream Program): mobile devices and intelligent, living in an enriched environment by sensors and actuators, connected by wireless networks.
Photovoltaic Platform (energy building optimized): optimization of energy, mainly solar home
