Public institution involved in the Earth Sciences applications
The BRGM Carnot Institute proposes a wide range of applied Earth Sciences covering the earth’s surface and subsurface: - Subsurface resources, including mineral resources, groundwater resources and geothermal resources,
- Use of the underground space, such as for storing materials and energy, and as a privileged environment for the development and safeguarding of all types of networks and communications means,
- Risk prevention and environmental safeguarding,
- Integrated data exploitation.

Presentation
R&D activity of the BRGM Carnot Institute in terms of proposed fields of competence:- Modelling of processes related to the surface and subsurface,
- Evaluation and management of geo-resources,
- Intensive calculations, geoscientific models, 3D visualization and virtual reality,
- Environmental metrology,
- Research into and development of geo-processes,
- Management and interoperability of geo-referenced data.
Economic sectors involved:- Mineral resources and groundwater sectors: mines and quarries, industrial supply chains, circular economy, and protection of associated sites,
- Geothermal resources and new unconventional energy resources, underground storage, geological storage of CO2, defining new uses of deep biodiversity,
- Construction work, urban development and town and country planning, risk prevention, preservation and restoration of damaged sites,
- Eco-technology, environmental services, and associated metrology and instrumentation,
- Management and transfer of scientific and technical data, and their use as a service.
The BRGM Carnot Institute combines- 7 operational services based in Orléans: Geology; Mineral Resources; Water; Risks; Industrial environment and innovating processes; Metrology, monitoring and analysis; Information systems and technology,
- a geothermal department,
- a service for Regional Activities.
A network of partnerships- On the international level: collaboration with laboratories in about twenty countries and local partnerships with great French or foreign groups.
- On the European level: the BRGM Carnot Institute is active in 30 FP7 projects, with research laboratories in Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Netherlands, Norway, Poland and Russia. It also has partnerships with other Carnot Institutes and European RTOs, such as Fraunhofer, VTT or TNO.
- On the national level: the BRGM Carnot Institute is involved in the governance of seven Competitiveness Clusters, created by the French government to foster cross fertilization between public and private organizations, such as AVENIA, DREAM, EAU, HYDREOS, RISQUES, S2E2 or TEAM2; a further 50 small- and medium-sized firms already collaborate in French and European research projects with the BRGM Carnot Institute.
